Gymnastics for anyone starts with the correct leotards. The perfect gymnastic clothes start with their precise sizing. No matter how great the leotard looks, it makes no difference if one cannot deem it a good fit. But how would we describe a gymnastic cloth size as so?

The size of a leotard can be said to be perfect when it is neither too tight nor too loose. It should provide ample comfort and flexibility and should not restrict the gymnast’s movements in any manner. It should not make them feel embarrassed or unpleasant but should serve as their source of confidence.

It seems weird that a mere size of cloth can have such influence, right? But for a gymnast, all these stand true.

How to Measure a Female Gymnast’s Leotard Size?

Sometimes, it may be arduous to get your hands on a size chart. In other cases, your body size may differ from the standard one mentioned in the chart. However, there is nothing to worry about regarding that. 

Using only a measuring tape, you can accurately calculate the size of a girl gymnastic clothing (justaucorps gymnastique fille) using the following steps:  

NOTE: All measurements need to be made into a full circle, starting and ending at the same point of the body.

1.   Torso: Firstly, measure your girth. Take the measuring tape from the central point of any shoulder and down the front of your body. Then, bring it through the crotch region and back to the starting point. This process is the most vital part. 

2.   Chest: Take a deep breath. Then, wrap the tape measure under your armpits and over the nipples to cover the entire bust.

3.   Hips: Measure the part that provides the maximum exposure due to the buttocks. 

4.   Waist: Measure the smallest part of the waistline, starting and ending at the same point. 

Merely taking the measurements is not enough. Every gymnast’s body is unique and may not fall under any category of the size chart. Thus, utilize the dimensions taken to find the size from the chart that offers the closest representation to your body.

How to Guarantee That the Measurement Is Accurate?

Because, in these cases, unprofessional hands perform the measuring process, particular errors may lie in the sizes taken. 

As such, to ensure that the measurements are precise, the female gymnasts can:

  • Wrap the tape measure around the largest bulging area of their chest.
  • Maintain a straight and stretched tape when measuring the torso.
  • Take the tape measure over the part of the hips and buttocks that is the widest.
  • Wear tight-fitting clothes to provide exact body proportions.

Factors That Affect A Leotard Fit:

There are a few elements that influence the size measurement of the body and fit of gymnastic cloth. They include:

  • The elasticity of the material: The fabric of the leotards is generally a 4-way stretch material. It expands both upwards and downwards and on both sides. Different varieties of the material stretch up to discrete amounts, controlling the elasticity of the gymnastic cloth. This factor can also affect the comfort of the leotards that may vary from individual to individual.
  • Style of the leotard: Depending on the type of gymnastic cloth, be it crop top or shorts set, the size of the leotard and the associated size chart can change.
  • Brand: Every gymnastics brand has its distinct design and sizing standards. Hence, the XL size for open-back leotards gymnastics clothes of one brand may or may not match the same variety of the others.
